Hello, and welcome back to Tomorrow Will Be Worse!

What a week it’s been—and it’s only Tuesday! August truly is the cruelest month. Before we get into the meat of today’s newsletter, I wanted to draw your attention to a few pieces my colleagues have written in the last week that I’ve really enjoyed. First, I loved Tara Palmeri’s interview with Rodney Davis, who didn’t even vote to impeach Donald Trump but simply voted to certify the election and got primaried out as a result. I also loved the conversation between Baratunde Thurston and Tina Nguyen about how both sides of the political spectrum are panicking about the end of the American experiment, just in totally different ways.

I thought Teddy Schleifer’s look behind the curtain of Nancy Pelosi’s fundraising juggernaut was deeply fascinating, showing us how so much of the work that fuels Washington happens very far from Washington. Also, there’s been so much Zaz news of late—nickname of the feared C.E.O. of Warner Brothers Discovery, David Zaslav—and if you haven’t been able to keep up with how he has earned himself another nickname, “the butcher,” check out Matt Belloni’s two most recent stories, on the demise of Batgirl and the impending layoffs—sorry, “synergies.” You will be glad you did!

It won’t matter to them that being a former president does not confer any kind of legal immunity. Nor will it matter that the D.O.J. presumably had probable cause that a crime had been committed and that the evidence of said crime was at this one location, and this was the only way to get it. And, of course, it won’t matter that, on his way to the White House in 2016, Trump made so much of Hillary Clinton’s mishandling of classified information that his supporters began chanting “lock her up” at his rallies—and they still do. After all, there is nothing more boring in this town than tales of hypocrisy...
