Welcome to The Varsity, my twice-weekly private email on the money, power, and personalities that run the sports business. I’m coming to you today from my hometown of Washington, D.C., where it’s starting to feel a lot like 2012, when RG-3 was a rookie and the city’s NFL future seemed limitless… for about 12 weeks. The exploits of another rookie QB this year, Jayden Daniels, have local football fans feeling that same kind of optimism, at least for now.

The exploits of another rookie QB this year, Jayden Daniels, have local football fans feeling that same kind of optimism, at least for now…

Cards 24-49ers 23
Grade: C
With less than three minutes left in the game, the Cardinals were down by two and faced a 4th and 5 from their own 40-yard line. Facing a heavy rush, QB Kyler Murray lofted a pass caught by rookie WR Marvin Harrison Jr. for a 12-yard first down. Tom Brady, the $37.5 million-per-year Fox Sports analyst, screamed—and then followed up with...

ESPN & MLB Prepare for Couples Counseling
ESPN, understandably miffed by the league’s much cheaper deals with other platforms, wants it both ways—to decrease the cost of its current rights package and also get its mitts on local broadcasts to power its forthcoming streaming service. Can both sides coexist happily?
JOHN OURAND JOHN OURAND
If marriage represents the triumph of imagination over intelligence, as Oscar Wilde once purportedly noted, and a second marriage demonstrates the triumph of hope over experience, then the corollary in the sports media business is a little more nuanced. In the era of massive platform disruption and cash optimization, a happy marriage could best be explained as not getting screwed by one partner while simultaneously kneecapping another. And this algebra of the heart perhaps best explains the modern kerfuffle that ESPN and Major League Baseball find themselves working through at this transitional moment in the media ecosystem.

ESPN, of course, pays around...
