Last week, when Imax C.E.O. Rich Gelfond presented the company’s latest quarterly earnings report, he also revealed
that Netflix had committed to showing Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia film on at least 1,000 Imax screens for an exclusive two-week run starting Thanksgiving weekend 2026. Studio executives and theater owners, both essential to Imax’s business, felt blindsided. And despite Gelfond’s claim that he’d won over the “various constituencies,” multiple sources tell Kim that some of the largest theater chains in North America are so angry they’ve threatened to not play Narnia on the
Imax screens in their theaters. But Gelfond assured both Netflix and Gerwig’s reps that he had a “nuclear option” to ensure theaters will book the film… but what, exactly, is he referring to?

ESPN’s head honcho, Jimmy Pitaro, didn’t want to get out of baseball entirely. He’d hoped to work out a deal with MLB
commissioner Rob Manfred that either resulted in a lower payment for rights fees or added programming—like local rights streams—for roughly the same amount, about $550 million per year. Such a deal would allow ESPN’s forthcoming D.T.C. streamer, code-named Flagship, to carry local MLB streams. But, John reveals, over the course of their negotiations, Manfred and his team owners were unmoved by the offer: If ESPN wanted to work out a new deal for the streaming rights, they would have to negotiate
those separately. Then, last Thursday morning, Pitaro called Manfred to tell him that ESPN would, in fact, exercise its out clause. For now, at least, it appears that ESPN’s time with baseball is done.
